Scholarships and Awards

Scholarship application deadline extended for the 2009 courses!
Applications must be received before Friday, October 24, 2008 5:00pm (Eastern Standard Time).

To encourage participation in the AZA Professional Training Program, the Board of Regents makes eight awards available to aquarium and zoo professionals to provide additional financial opportunities for individuals and institutions.

Each of the following four scholarships provides:

  • funding for full tuition;
  • meals and lodging at the double-room rate;
  • air travel up to $500;
  • round-trip ground transportation from the airport to the school site;
  • and an additional $200 stipend to help defray costs normally incurred while attending the course
Margaret A. Dankworth Management Scholarship

Successful applicants for the Margaret A. Dankworth Management Scholarship should demonstrate leadership ability or leadership potential and a commitment to professional growth.

Applicants must be AZA individual members employed in a zoo or aquarium or related facility. Employment in an AZA accredited institution is not required, but preferred. This Award is based on merit alone and not on need.

This award may be applied to either Managing for Success: Career Development or Organizational Development.

Robert O. Wagner Professional Development Award

This award may be applied toward any of the AZA Professional Training courses.

Applicants for the Robert O. Wagner award should demonstrate professional involvement in AZA programs or conservation activities, leadership ability  or leadership potential and a commitment to professional growth.

Applicants must be an AZA individual member employed in a zoo or aquarium or related facility. Employment in an AZA accredited institution is not required, but preferred. This Award is based on merit alone and not on need.

Boards of Regents Diversity Advancement Award

This award may be applied toward any of the AZA Professional Training courses.

Its purpose is to support participation in the AZA Professional Training Program by under represented individuals who are AZA members and employed in a zoo or aquarium or related facility. Need may be taken into account for this award.

Disney's Animal Kingdom Diversity Advancement Award

This special diversity award may be applied to any AZA course that is required for the Conservation Education track of the GMU Masters program in Zoo and Aquarium Leadership.  The courses include the three core courses of Conservation Education, Institutional Records Keeping and Managing for Success:  Career Development and Creating Successful Exhibits.  You do not have to be enrolled in the Masters Program to apply, but it is preferred. 

The award’s purpose is to provide support for training in an education or interpretation specialty at the AZA Professional Training Schools.  Applicants must be AZA individual members of an under represented group who are employed in a zoo or aquarium. Need may be taken into account for this award.

International Conservation Training Award

This award may be applied toward any of the AZA Professional Training courses.

The International Conservation Training Award promotes professional training for our international zoological colleagues. Preference will be given to candidates who are currently involved in cooperative efforts with AZA member institutions or participating in TAGs, CAPs or SSPs. Employees of any zoo or aquarium outside the United States and Canada may apply. Need may be taken into account for this award.

Zoo Conservation Outreach Group Conservation Training Award

This award may be applied toward any of the AZA Professional Training courses.

The Zoo Conservation Outreach Group (ZCOG) Conservation Training Award promotes professional training for our zoological colleagues in Latin America and the Caribbean Basin. Preference will be given to applicants that show involvement in cooperative field conservation efforts with AZA member institutions or other regional partners. Employees or associates of any zoo, aquarium or related facility in Latin America or the Caribbean Basin may apply.

The Ellen Trout Zoo Crocodile Conservation Award

This award may be applied only towards the Crocodilian Biology and Captive Management Course.

This award promotes professional training for our zoological colleagues from countries in Latin America and the Caribbean Basin. Employees or associates of any zoo, aquarium or related facility in Latin America or the Caribbean Basin may apply. The Award is sponsored by Zoo Conservation Outreach Group and the Ellen Trout Zoo. Need may be taken into account for this award.

Cameron Park Zoo Amphibian Conservation Award

This award may be applied only towards the Amphibian Biology and Management Course.

This award promotes professional training for our zoological colleagues from countries in Latin America and the Caribbean Basin. Employees or associates of any zoo, aquarium or related facility in Latin America or the Caribbean Basin may apply. The Award is sponsored by Zoo Conservation Outreach Group and Cameron Park Zoo. Need may be taken into account for this award.
