October 9 - 12 » Otter Keeper Workshop
Hosted by Oakland Zoo in Oakland, Calif. The focus of the workshop will be North American river otters and Asian small-clawed otters. Keepers of other species are welcome to attend. Topics will include: captive management issues, enrichment, training, water quality, health care, nutrition, diet, hand-raising, exhibit design, lots of sharing of information between keepers. October 11 - 17 » AAZV / ARAV Joint Conference
American Association of Zoo Veterinarians (AAZV) and Association of Reptilian and Amphibian Veterinarians (ARAV) Joint Conference is being held at the Hilton Los Angeles Airport, Los Angeles, Calif. AAZV wet labs are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, October 11 and 12, 2008. Web Labs along with general session lectures will offer approximately 35 hours of Continuing Education credits. The ARAV portion of the joint conference is scheduled from October 13 - 15, 2008. Wet Labs for ARAV are scheduled for Sunday, October 12, 2008. October 13 - 15 » Neotropical Primate Husbandry, Research, and Conservation Conference
Hosted by the Brookfield Zoo. This conference will focus on a variety of topics pertaining to neotropical primates and will bring together staff from zoological parks, sanctuaries, and universities, as well as field researchers and range country biologists to share the most current information on husbandry, conservation, and emergent issues pertaining to captive and wild populations of neotropical primates. The workshop will include three days of presentations, a poster session, as well an icebreaker, silent auction, and banquet. Additional information regarding registration fees, travel information, and submission of abstracts will be made available in late 2008. Co-hosted by the International Elephant Foundation and the Post-Graduate Foundation in Veterinary Science of Mahidol University. Held at the North Carolina State University School of Veterinary Medicine. The symposium's focus this year is "Obesity in Zoological Species" although talks from all areas of comparative nutrition will be considered. The purpose of this conference is to strive to follow Dr. Sue Crissey's footsteps of encouraging nutritionists, zoo personnel, university faculty, veterinarians and students to come together to present nutrition research and participate in dialogue.
